The Sioux Falls Gold is in its first-year as a summer collegiate wood bat baseball team in the newly-established Pioneer Collegiate Baseball League. The purpose of the team is to provide: (i) family-friendly, affordable entertainment for the Sioux Falls baseball community; (ii) a summer baseball program for off-season college players that offers wood bat experience in a competitive atmosphere; (iii) an attractive venue that allows professional scouts, area coaches and other recruiters to watch collegiate prospects using wood bats against live pitching in competition.
The GOLD’s 2017 regular season schedule is for 35 games (20 home and 15 away) starting on May 30th and ending July 29th. Other than limited Sunday afternoon contests, all GOLD games will enjoy early evening start-times (generally, 7:05 pm), allowing players to retain or pursue day-time job opportunities.
Immediately upon conclusion of the regular season, teams from Bancroft (IA), Carroll (IA), Storm Lake (IA), Albert Lea (MN) and Sioux Falls (SD) will play each other for a final time, either in a round robin or single-elimination post-season playoff tournament. The surviving two teams will advance to a one-game League Championship Game, tentatively in Sioux Falls.
Karras Park Home of Ronken Field is nestled on the campus of Augustana University in central Sioux Falls (33rd St. & Grange Ave.). The field features a turf infield, grandstand with chair-back seats, bleachers, state-of-the-art press box, party deck and luxury suite. A new concessions stand and partitioned men’s & women’s restroom facility has been added to the complex for the 2017 season. Substantial on-site parking, public viewing areas, high resolution lighting and other customary amenities bring a further “minor-league team” experience and feel to the players and the fans.
The GOLD contracts with college-level certified umpires only. The GOLD plays by MLB professional rules, with some exceptions. We adhere to all recruiting and eligibility rules of the NCAA as well as numerous other sections of NCAA rules.
SUPPORT AND STAFF
The General Manager is the team’s chief operating officer, with assistance from team ownership. Part-time staffing varies widely, but typically includes local student interns, independent contractors, and volunteers. The field manager and coaching staffs are separate positions, with the Head Coach in charge of all recruiting, conditioning, player discipline and on-field decisioning.
The GOLD maintains an independent team website at www.siouxfallsgold.com, with a concurrent feed into the Pioneer league website at www.pioneerbaseballleague.com. The GOLD will use iScore Baseball as the official statistician media for the team. Live game situational boards will be available for all home and away games, as well as arrays of statistics for the serious fan.
PRIDE AND COMMUNITY
The GOLD gives area fans and stakeholders a team to watch and support during the summer months when there’s a gap between regular college sports seasons. The GOLD brings great pride and a sense of community to the ballpark—for families, friends, baseball enthusiasts and scouts from throughout the area. It also shapes player reputation and promotes name recognition in other cities and towns, while building life-long memories and sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching for and achieving common team goals.
